When Should I Plant Wildflowers?

Once you have decided that you want to plant wildflowers in your garden at home, the next step is to decide when to plant the seeds. This can be done in the spring, summer or autumn. The deciding factor is based not just on personal preference, but on the weather in the area that you live. Certain weather conditions will make it more practical to plant at one time of the year instead of another. If you live in a climate where it is warm most of the year like California, Arizona or Texas then you have much more choice in when to plant. There will not likely be a frost to damage your seeds so planting in the fall will mean an earlier spring growth. These earlier flowers give your garden the opportunity to brighten your home that much sooner.

If you live in an area that does get those biting frosts, especially at night, you still have a choice on when to plant but you will need to take more precautions when putting in your seeds. You need to plant wildflowers deeper than in other places if you will be getting frosts. There are some advantages to using this method. One is that the seeds will have fewer weeds to fight against if they come up early. They will also have the advantage of the early spring rains to help them grow once the land has defrosted. Planting in the summer can be risky as it will already be hot and the growing season will be shorter.

For those who prefer to plant wildflowers in the spring this will still give you a beautiful garden. Many suggest that if this is the time of year you want to plant you will need to use extra patience in preparing your garden. Instead of planting at the first sign of green sprouting from the soil, give it a little time to see what is coming up. Then pull all the weeds. This will give your flowers a better area to grow because you have cleared it before the wildflowers have to fight for their survival. Then plant wildflowers and watch as they grow without having to compete for space as they add color to your garden.

Green Space: Plant a wildflower garden this season

Many of us have tried — and failed — at wildflower planting. That’s mainly due to picking the wrong seed and not understanding their habitat. Note that annual wildflowers grow and bloom quickly but live only one year. Perennial wildflowers return each season from the same roots and over time build a vista of color.
